New Horizons probe starts 3 billion-mile trek to Pluto

Destination, Pluto. NASA's New Horizons spacecraft blasted off Thursday bound for the solar system's last unexplored planet.

Borne aloft by a powerful Atlas-V rocket at 2 p.m. ET, the $700 million probe was lifted away from Earth at 36,256 mph, the fastest space launch ever.

The spacecraft is on a path to arrive at Pluto on July 14, 2015. It will then travel farther on into the Kuiper comet belt.
