Iranian Urges End to Violence Over Drawings

... Quote:
BRUSSELS, Belgium - Iran's foreign minister called Monday for an end to violent protests over the Prophet Muhammad caricatures that have left at least 45 people dead in the Muslim world during the past month.

Pope Benedict XVI also tried to soothe the tensions, saying religious symbols must be respected but violence can never be justified. Malaysia's prime minister warned that mistrust and fear of Islam is growing every day in the West.

In Afghanistan, where 11 people were killed in three days of prophet protests earlier this month, about 2,000 students protested Monday, shouting "Long live Osama!," burning Danish and American flags and photos of President Bush.

In Indonesia, about 100 protesters shouting "God is Great!" burned a Danish flag in Java province, a day after protesters attacked the American Embassy in the capital, Jakarta.

"We should try to cool down the situation. We do not support any violence," Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said during a visit to Brussels

The right to blaspheme

... Quote:
Eleven French writers demand the right to poke fun wherever and whenever they want.

At the time of "The Satanic Verses" when the fatwa was pronounced on a famous author, here and there on the radio and television, at dinners and between the lines of editorials, fine minds were asking whether it was a good book. Other, more blunt ones, were already talking about provocation.

Today we are asked to consider whether the cartoons of a prophet published in a Danish paper five months ago are in fact any good. One is tempted to say the cartoons and the question of their artistic value are hardly worth considering at all. We are told they are stirring up hatred. Here too we would like to say that hatred is neither in our values nor in our hearts. And how can we be responsible for stirring up hatred in others, when hatred is a spontaneously combustible fuel?

Those older than us will no doubt be feeling a strong sense of deja-vu. It seems that for the fine minds at the time of the Munich Agreement, the German people were not to be humiliated at any cost, to save the pride of this grand nation which had suffered ever since its defeat in 1918, etc. This was a strange way of showing our consideration for our German friends, by leaving them in the hands of a power that would oppress them, lead them into endless wars, make them stoop to ignoble acts and, adding insult to injury, demonise them and literally split their country in two, for the Devil divides.

Saudi Tabloid Shut Down for Cartoons

... Quote:
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - An editor at a Saudi tabloid newspaper that was closed down for republishing cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad defended the paper's action Tuesday, saying it was based on a ruling by the kingdom's highest religious authority.

Shams, or Sun, republished three of the 12 controversial cartoons on Jan. 28. They initially appeared in the Danish daily Jyllands-Posten last September and have been republished in papers around the world, causing extreme anger among Muslims.

Saudi authorities closed down the paper on Monday.

"The paper republished the cartoons after the kingdom's mufti (highest religious authority) issued a fatwa, or edict, in which he encouraged their publication 'to show their ugliness and to expand the volume of anger,'" said the editor, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of issue.

It was not possible to independently confirm the fatwa, which the editor said was issued during a religious television program.

Sectarian Violence Kills 93 in Nigeria

... Quote:
LAGOS, Nigeria - Bodies littered the streets of the southern Nigerian city of Onitsha on Wednesday as the death toll from days of Christian-Muslim violence across this volatile West African nation rose to at least 93.

The sectarian violence was sparked by deadly weekend protests against newspaper caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. It is the worst to hit Nigeria since 2004, when Muslim-Christian skirmishes in the north killed more than 700 people.

"I've counted more than 20 people killed today," Onitsha resident Isotonu Achor said after gangs of rioters armed with machetes and shotguns poured through the mainly Christian city.

"Major streets are littered with bodies of people killed today, most of them northerners."

Other witnesses also said they saw at least 20 dead. Thirty people were killed in Onitsha a day earlier.

Major violence and riots in Nigeria kills 93 people. This is totally out of control. Send in the military and clear the streets. Protesting is one thing but this much violence is totally stupid. Maybe they should build a wall between christians and muslims, like the wall of china.

Nigerian Christians Mob Muslims

... Quote:
ONITSHA, Nigeria - Christians in this southern Nigerian city burned Muslim corpses and defaced wrecked mosques Thursday, showing little repentance after days of sectarian violence that has killed more than 120 people across the country.

Onitsha has borne the brunt, with at least 80 of the deaths. The violence followed weekend protests over the publication of cartoons of Muhammad, the Islamic prophet.

"We don't want these mosques here anymore. These people are causing all the problems all over the world because they don't fear God," said 34-year Ifeanyi Ese, standing amid the concrete rubble of an Onitsha mosque.

With a crowd gathered, Ese angrily scrawled "Mohammed is a man, but Jesus is from above" on a shattered mosque wall with a burned stick.

Nigeria - Christians burn bodies of Muslims slain during riots - 146 Dead

News seems to be scares on the muslim riots the last few days.

... Quote:
ONITSHA, Nigeria -- Christian youths burned the corpses of Muslims yesterday on the streets of Onitsha in southeastern Nigeria, the city worst hit by religious riots that have killed at least 146 people across the country in five days.

Christian mobs, seeking revenge for the killings of Christians in the north, attacked Muslims with machetes, set fire to them, destroyed their houses, and torched mosques in two days of violence in Onitsha, where 93 people died.

''We are very happy that this thing is happening so that the north will learn their lesson," said Anthony Umai, a motorcycle taxi rider, standing close to where Christian youths had piled up the corpses of 10 Muslims and were burning them.

Vatican presses Muslims on rights

... Quote:
PARIS -- After backing calls by Muslims for respect during the furor over cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, the Vatican is urging Muslim countries to reciprocate by showing tolerance toward their Christian minorities.

"Enough now with this turning the other cheek. It's our duty to protect ourselves," Monsignor Velasio De Paolis, secretary of the Vatican's supreme court, thundered in the daily La Stampa.

"The West has had relations with the Arab countries for half a century, mostly for oil, and has not been able to get the slightest concession on human rights," he said.

Bishop Rino Fisichella, head of one of the Roman universities that train young priests from around the world, told the daily Corriere della Sera that the Vatican should "drop this diplomatic silence."

"We should put pressure on international organizations to make the societies and states in majority Muslim countries face up to their responsibilities," said Bishop Fisichella, rector of the Pontifical Lateran University.

Roman Catholic leaders at first said Muslims were right to be outraged when Western newspapers reprinted Danish caricatures of Muhammad, including one with a bomb in his turban.

After criticizing both the cartoons and the violent protests in Muslim countries that followed, the Vatican this week linked the issue to its long-standing concern that the rights of other faiths are limited, sometimes severely, in Muslim countries.

Vatican prelates have been concerned by recent killings of two Catholic priests in Turkey and Nigeria. Turkish press linked the death there to the cartoons furor. At least 146 Christians and Muslims have died in religious riots in Nigeria.

"If we tell our people they have no right to offend, we have to tell the others they have no right to destroy us," Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican's secretary of state, told reporters in Rome.

Muslim hackers deface Danish Web sites, Nearly 3,000

... Quote:
Muslim hackers, angered by the publication of cartoons of the prophet Muhammad, have defaced nearly 3,000 Danish Web sites in the past month in what could be the biggest politically motivated cyberattack to date.

Those knowledgeable about the subject say the worldwide protests over a Danish newspaper's decision to publish the caricatures may prove to be something of a coming-of-age moment for Internet mujahedeen -- Islamic extremists committed to electronic terrorist attacks.

"They see this as a huge opportunity," said Stephen Ulph, a terrorism analyst with the Jamestown Foundation who monitors Web forums and chat rooms used by Muslim hackers. "You can feel the excitement. ... There's a sense that they can make a real difference."

12 muslim men try to kidnap cartoonists daughter

As translated by Helmutt on ATS

12 "muslim men" tried to get hold of a daughter of one of the cartoonists at her school. They didnīt find her because she was not in school on that day. All 12 cartoonists and their families have police protection now and have gone "underground" in fear of their lives.
