Whatever happened to the monowheel?

This facinating site shows pictures of monowheels through the centuries.

We don't seem to have the passion for them that they had in the past it seems.

Here is one monowheel (below) from about 1917 that also has an aeroplane engine at the front, a little bit dangerous on the road I would think...

Looks like there are heaps of modern monowheels, from the bottom of the page.

Pity they are so impractical.

Note that it only goes in a straight line, and even then looks really shakey...
