Iran foreign minister in Syria, discusses Lebanon

DAMASCUS, July 17 (Reuters) - Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and Syrian officials discussed the confrontation between Hizbollah and Israel on Monday, the official news agency SANA said.

Mottaki, who arrived in Syria on a brief visit, delivered a letter to President Bashar al-Assad from President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad expressing support for Syria against any threat, SANA said, in reference to Israel, which is bombarding Lebanon.

Syria and Iran are the main backers of Hizbollah, the Lebanese Shi'ite group whose fighters captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border operation on Wednesday, sparking Israeli attacks on Lebanon that have killed 179 people, all but 13 of them civilians.

The two countries say demands by Hizbollah for Israel to withdraw from occupied Lebanese territory and release Lebanese prisoners of war it has held for years were just.

It might end this war if Israel released the Lebanese prisoners of war in exchange for the 2 Israeli soldiers.
