Rape victim gets 90 lashes in Saudi Arabia

A Saudi court has sentenced a gang rape victim to 90 lashes of the whip because she was alone in a car with a man to whom she was not married.

The sentence was passed at the end of a trial in which the al- Qateef high criminal court convicted four Saudis convicted of the rape, sentencing them to prison terms and a total of 2,230 lashes.

The four, all married, were sentenced respectively to five years and 1,000 lashes, four years and 800 lashes, four years and 350 lashes, and one year and 80 lashes.

A fifth, married, man who was stated to have filmed the rape on his mobile phone still faces investigation. Two others alleged to have taken part in the rape evaded capture.

Saudi courts take marital status into account in sexual crimes. A male friend of the rape victim was also sentenced to 90 lashes for being alone with her in the car.

The court heard that the victim and her friend were followed by the assailants to their car, kidnapped and taken to a remote farm, where the raping occurred.

Well, what is shocking is that the people who raped the person have gotten away quite well here. I would imagine that they were saudi nationals or maybe even influential and rich to have gotten away.
I find this suprising because they have punishments like cutting a criminals head off for murdering somebody or cutting peoples tounges off for speaking against the king and islam etc but have 1 year sentencing for rapists? That is quite bizzare! Also about the part where the woman gets lashed, well that is law in Saudi Arabia. They dont exactly have a court of appeals where they discuss the merits of Womens rights etc.

The law in Saudi arabia states that women cannot travel alone at any time and must be escorted by a man- either a brother, father, husband at all times. There is no concept of "friend" who is a man. Also they must wear the hijab at all times in public. Moreover it is illegal to hold a mans hand in public for a woman, be he her husband or whatever. Also for non-muslims this rule applies and they are forced to cover their heads at all times. Also women are not allowed to drive so I doubt she could escape even if she had the opportunity to. Also according to the law there public photography is banned and so this guy with the video camera should easily be booked for atleast that.

Maybe incidents like this will bring to life some form of advocacy for women and maybe lead to change. Its not like all the women there are illiterate and ignorant of the rights they ought to have, because many of them are educated in the finest institutions here in America and Europe its just that they cant speak against the system, which is designed by "Allah" .
