I bet this shape only looks impossible from one single position, where the camera is. If you changed positions, you would see what it really looks like.

That is a nice trick! The shadow gives it away, though. You can tell that the middle horizontal beam is sticking out and ends at a miter cut that is exactly in line with the point of view of the camera and ends right in line with the edge of the vertical beam.
