Harrier Jump Jet bought on Ebay

What on earth is such military equipment doing on ebay to start off with?

Neil Banwell has made a childhood dream come true - by picking up a 35million Harrier jump jet on eBay for 10,000.

Dad-of-three Neil, 39, said:

I was 14 when the war broke out and used to watch them flying out on the news every night. I was so disappointed when they stopped flying them last year - but I couldn't believe it when I saw one on eBay so I jumped at the chance.

It was my daughter Jess's 14th birthday and she put the bid on for me.

We then went out to a barbecue and the next morning we found out we owned a Sea Harrier.

The 46ft-long aircraft is now being stored in a hangar near his home in Wedmore, Somerset. Builder Neil had the plane delivered from an aircraft dealer in Suffolk and now plans to restore the jet to its former glory.

Sea Harrier ZX494 came complete with two 30mm cannons but minus its 250,000 Pegasus engine and computer systems due to regulations which prevent it being flown in the UK.

Neil hopes to pick up a used engine from aircraft maker BAE Systems.

The original ejector seat is still in place - but the explosive charge has been removed to prevent Neil being accidentally fired through the hanger roof. On the historic flight on May 1, 1982, the Harrier was piloted by Black Leader Lt Cmdr Andy Auld, dropping cluster bombs on Port Stanley airfield.

The jets were nicknamed the "black death" by Argentinian pilots after shooting down 21 enemy aircraft.
