Palestinian suicide bomber kills one woman, wounds 11 in Dimona, Israel

A suicide bomber blew himself up in the southern town of Dimona at around 10:30 A.M. Monday, killing a woman and wounding 11 others, in the first terror attack of its kind in over a year.

Negev Police Chief Yossi Porianta said that there had been two suicide bombers, but only one managed to detonate his explosives belt; the other was shot dead by security forces before he could blow himself up.

The second bomber had apparently been knocked out by the force of the first blast and was about to detonate his own belt, when rescue teams noticed the explosives and alerted police, who shot him at point blank.

Now it starts, that which Israel had been trying to prevent.
The terrorists infiltrated into Israel from the Sinai region, having originally come from Gaza. The border between Gaza and the Egyptian Sinai peninsula is currently open after Hamas destroyed the border-barrier two weeks ago.

This is the first time the southern town of Dimona has been hit by a suicide-bomb attack.

Israeli defense officials warned last week that Hamas and other terrorist groups had sent terrorist operatives into the Sinai through the open Gaza-Egypt border, in order to carry out suicide bombings in Israel. On Saturday, Feb. 3, two Palestinians wearing suicide-bomb belts were caught in Sinai by Egyptian security forces and on Friday, Feb. 2, 15 armed Palestinians were also arrested in Sinai by Egyptian forces.

In 2007, Palestinian terrorist groups attempted to carry out 29 suicide bombings in Israel which were prevented by Israeli security services, according to Israelís internal intelligence agency the General Security Services.

The last suicide-bombing occurred on Jan. 29, 2007 in Eilat, was also perpetrated by PIJ and the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, and came from Gaza via Sinai. In 2007, there were 17 attempted suicide bombings originating from Gaza.
