Video of the effects of IED damage on Humvee in iraq

Interesting video showing the IED damage to a Humvee with holes through 2 inch steel doors. The narrator says the deep holes were made by 'shaped charges' which points to Iranian weapons. Warning for swearing.

A comment by one of the viewers is very good comprehensive outline of Shaped charges....

EFPs are extremely tough to stop. You can't stop it simply by adding an armor plate. It would need to be more than 8 inches thick to completely stop penetration. It's so effective because of how its formed by the explosion.

It's forced to invert before propelling forward under extreme shock and heat, and usually being soft copper it's transformed into a plasma state of being, when it impacts another solid, it doesn't smash its way through, instead it cuts through by transferring its energy into the target. Like a hot knife through butter.

A good example is the way a plasma cutter will cut steel. It cuts so quickly using extremely focused energy the surrounding metal doesn't even heat up before the cut is over.

The only real effective way to stop EFPs is to add compound armor. 3 or 4 thinner armor plates, standard 3/8"AR500, with 1/2" foam filled gaps between them.

This forces the EFP to face repeated resistive contact, destroying its velocity and allowing it to cool enough in that split second to return to its original solid state and shatter. After piercing the first 1 or 2 sheets, it's nothing more than a few chunks of soft copper splattering against cold steel on the 3rd.
