Kayaker Rescued from Whanganui River

A kayaker was pinned in her boat with only her head above the water for three hours during a terrifying ordeal in the Whanganui River.

The 20-year-old backpacker from Bavaria, Germany, was kayaking down the river when her boat became trapped between rocks and she was unable to get free.

Her friend paddled down the river for about 2 hours to get help, and was able to alert police from a a radio in a Conservation Department hut.

The woman was reached by a rescue team in a jetboat and was taken to Wanganui Hospital with hypothermia and severe bruising.

Square Trust rescue helicopter spokesman Jarrod Colbourne said he expected he would be retrieving a body when he heard how long the woman had been in the water.

"She was really lucky to survive," he said.

"When we reached her she was shivering and didn't really say much, but it was obvious she was happy to see us.

A jet boat! That is a rescue team that is there to save lives and not collect bodies. Awesome!
I think of what the person was thinking when I read stories like this one. The terror this girl was experiencing must have been incredible, but she didn't let it paralyse her strong will to live.
