Make Firefox portable run faster

Firefox portable running off the flash drive can be a very slow program. Apparently the data can't run in both directions at once so its like a one way bridge in the middle of a highway.

I found a way around it that works for me and realized that others are having trouble when I foolishly allowed Firefox portable to be updated automatically, against the explicit instructions of the people who made it..

Theoretically all of firefox can run totally from the flash drive. But when you are loading pages it means that all the webpage elements have to be loaded down onto the Flash drive to see it. I changed the directory of the cache from the browser to C: drive.

I know this creates a vulnerability if you have password protected pages etc, but it sure speeds up the browser and you can make sure you flush the cache when you are finished.

How to do it?

1 Type about:config into the browser window. This allows you to play with all the settings inside of Firefox.

2 I set the download folder to browser.download.lastDir; C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop Then you can move or delete from the desktop as well. (Of course this might not work if you use it on multiple machines and the username is different, but it hasn't caused me any hassles so far)

3 I set the cache to the temp file on the computer browser.cache.disk.parent_directory; C:\\WINDOWS\\Temp\\Temporary Internet Files

As a result once firefox is loaded off the flash drive it hardly needs to access the drive again, the program is in the ram, and the downloads are into the local machine.

More Firefox tweaks to increase speed

Reduce the amount of RAM Firefox uses for its cache feature

1. Type “about:config” (no quotes) in the address bar in the browser.
2. Find “browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewer”
3. Set it’s value to “0“;(Zero)
Increase the Speed at Which Firefox loads pages

4. Alter the entries as follows:
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 10.

This means it will make 10 requests at once.

Optionally (for even faster web browsing) here are some more options for your about:config (you might have to create some of these entries by Right Click –> New– > Integer or String

network.dns.disableIPv6: set “false”
“content.notify.backoffcount”: set “5“; (Five)
“plugin.expose_full_path”: set “true”.
“ui.submenuDelay”: set “0; (zero)
Reduce RAM usage to 10MB when Firefox is minimized:

This little hack will drop Firefox’s RAM usage down to 10 Mb when minimized:

1. Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
2. In the box that pops up enter “config.trim_on_minimize”. Press Enter.
3. Now select True and then press Enter.
4. Restart Firefox
