The mysterious Nortons pifts.exe file and coverup

Nortons released a patch for their awful software, and the new file tried to access a server in Africa! People complained about the file called pifts.exe on Nortons board and Nortons deleted all comments related to it.

Eventually they released a statement saying it was a mistake on their part as the patch was 'unsigned' and not ready for release, however many people have other theories as to what was happening.

Nortons official comment

This site here summarizes some of the conspiracy theories around this unusual situation. Could it be a 'backdoor' to be used by the FBI to monitor computers?
... Quote:
According to Encyclopaedia Dramatica, this could be part of a the so-called "Magic Lantern" software by the FBI - though this is a little far-fetched as the executable was not directed at the States, but Norton users in general. However, Wikipedia does supply evidence to this theory.
The Washington Post also covers it.

Just another reason NOT to use Nortons on your machine, I always delete out the program for people and instead use the Free AVG virus scanner

Lmao, yeah it doesn’t surprise me in the least. I’ve tried Norton’s years ago and will never touch it again.

Way back in time immemorial. Just after the millennium maybe 2001? A friend of mine lent his spare pc To me as I never had one before. He also had a dialup account also for me to use as I never been on the Net before and because he had just got broadband.

So I set it all up and for about a month I had not one single problem until he came over one day and noticed I had no protection on. He put Norton antivirus and Norton system works on the comp, well to cut it short within a week I could not go on the net at all unless I ran disk/Win doctor which showed all these errors I had and it magically fixed them and I could dialup straight away and go online.

This happened every single time I booted up and tried to go online. WTF I thought, needless to say I took it off and reverted back to having no problems.

Okay so that wasn’t to do with the antivirus side but I will never touch Norton’s again. :sh
