A group of New Zealand children played with a dead woman's body for 11 days, thinking it was a crocodile corpse.

A group of kids found what they thought was the body of a crocodile in a creek, so they poked it with sticks and played with it for 11 days. The problem was, New Zealand doesn't have any crocodiles, it was a human body, possibly of the mother of kids known to them.

It is believed an eight-year-old boy stumbled on the body in a creek north of Auckland. Days later a witness said he saw about 10 boys prodding the corpse with sticks.

One of them said "Mister, I think we've found a crocodile in the creek", but the man thought it might have been an old tree trunk.

Merv Heka, Hibiscus Coast Raiders Rugby League Club vice-president, said children playing for the club first found the remains at a gala day on July 25. They were upset when they learned the body belonged to a woman, he said.

The creek runs behind the local leisure centre and is next to a rugby league club.

"Three or four of these kids are quite traumatised," Mr Heka said.

It became obvious that the corpse was human when parents tried to fish it out with a broomstick, but could not reach it. They then decided to call the police.

The New Zealand Herald reported that the body had fabric and some hair attached.

Detectives are not ruling out the possibility the body is that of 39-year-old Alanah Brough, who was last seen more than six months ago.

Detective Inspector Bruce Scott said the body had been there for at least a few weeks but possibly months.

"It appears to have been there for quite some time. It appears to be quite decomposed.

"We believe that it could be a female person in the creek, but until we get the identification done we won't know for sure."

The body is undergoing a post mortem.
