Faked climate change data finally exposed? A storm is developing in Climate Change research

The Climate Research Unit, a preeminent Climate Change Organization was hacked recently with many files stolen and released on the internet. This is not going away and may snowball into a major issue.

One of the more interesting documents found refer to a famous "Hockey Stick" chart that preports to show the massive change in world temperature this century.

From the hack comes these cutting emails which appear to discuss altering the data to hide the fact that change has not been as dramatic as shown in the chart and to 'smooth out' data from 1930.

Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,

Once Tim's got a diagram here we'll send that either later today or first thing tomorrow.

I've just completed Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith's to hide the decline. Mike's series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998.

Thanks for the comments, Ray.
But what most readers do not generally appreciate is that, one month earlier, Dr. Tim Osborn, also of the CRU, sent an e-mail to Michael Mann (File 0939154709.txt) containing two columns of data from his study of tree-ring densities. That e-mail begins thus:

... Quote:
Keith has asked me to send you a timeseries for the IPCC multi-proxy reconstruction figure, to replace the one you currently have. The data are attached to this e-mail. They go from 1402 to 1995, although we usually stop the series in 1960 because of the recent non-temperature signal that is superimposed on the tree-ring data that we use. I haven't put a 40-yr smoothing through them - I thought it best if you were to do this to ensure the same filter was used for all curves.

The code of the chart is also analyzed by a programmer and the following was found ...
The analysis of the material are now focusing on the "Hockey Stick" fortran code.
... Quote:
The “READ ME” makes very clear just how extreme the measures taken to ensure that the paleoclimate studies produced the desired “hockey stick” shape. Further the file shows that the basic data set is corrupted beyond all recognition, due to poor data management practices.

The significant issue with the “hockey stick” treatment is that the code is designed to overwrite all treering proxy data after 1960, because it shows poor agreement with instrumental temperature records, but treats the tree-rings as a reliable proxy for temperature before 1960. That's a very questionable practice.......
Some of the other issues raised by the documents include

  • efforts to get skeptical academics removed from post.
  • efforts to stop critical journals getting published
  • admissions that there is a static/cooling trend that can't be explained by the current models – amusingly, that's a problem with the data, not the models...
  • breaches of Freedom of Information legislation.
  • attempts to get another BBC journalist to bring Paul to task for writing the “whatever happened to Global Warming” piece...
  • discussions about changing the Sea Surface temperature record to make an unfortunate warm even in the 1940s go away.
... Quote:
One poster, alleges that he's worked through the code (allegedly FORTRAN) used in one of the major dendrochronological reconstructions. He alledges that this code (from an allegedly major figure) not only shows the manipulation of post 1960 divergence between dendro records and instrumental temperatures ("hiding the decline"), but also a manual adjustment to avoid showing high temperatures in the 1930s.

More mutterings of rebellion against the Climate Change theorists

A leading climate scientist today accused the Indian environment ministry of "arrogance" after the release of a government report claiming that there is no evidence climate change has caused "abnormal" shrinking of Himalayan glaciers.

Jairam Ramesh, India's environment minister, released the controversial report in Delhi, saying it would "challenge the conventional wisdom" about melting ice in the mountains.

Two years ago, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN agency which evaluates the risk from global warming, warned the glaciers were receding faster than in any other part of the world and could "disappear altogether by 2035 if not sooner".

Today Ramesh denied any such risk existed: "There is no conclusive scientific evidence to link global warming with what is happening in the Himalayan glaciers." The minister added although some glaciers are receding they were doing so at a rate that was not "historically alarming".

The scientist at the heart of the climate change scandal was under growing pressure to quit last night.

George Monbiot, a leading environmentalist, said Phil Jones should resign from the Climatic Research Unit over leaked emails that appear to show researchers suppressed scientific data.

More emails came to light yesterday, including one in which an American climatologist admitted it was a travesty that scientists could not explain a lack of global warming in recent years.

In another note, UK researchers dismissed the work of scientists challenging global warming as 'crap'.

Another appeared to call for pressure on the BBC after a reporter suggested that evidence for rising temperatures since 2001 was thin.

In one of the most damning messages, Professor Jones appeared to respond to the death of a climate sceptic with the words 'in an odd way this is cheering news!'.

The leak has been a huge embarrassment to the climate unit at the University of East Anglia, which is a global leader in its field.

Although there is no hint of evidence that climate change is not real, the emails appear to show researchers manipulating raw data and discussing how to dodge Freedom of Information requests.

Yesterday, Mr Monbiot, who writes on green issues, said the emails could scarcely be more damaging.

I'm not suprised those envirnomentalists are lying to the public. Just look at their leader, Al Gore....he say's reduce your carbon footprint, but he's the one flying on a private jet?! Now does that make sense?

Like Al Gore once said, their's this old AFRICAN proverb I made up once....recycle everything.

I think the problem with this news item is that climate change deniers are using it to say that all climate change is faked. Yet hundreds of other reports and data by other scientists are not implicated, only a small bunch of guys at one organization.
