UK's worst Christmas tree

A festive pot plant that cost 125 disguised as a Christmas Tree has been nominated as the worst Christmas tree in the UK. Unfortunately the replacement looks just as bad.

When the sleepy village of Sacriston in County Durham proudly put up its Christmas tree there were hoots of derision.

The supposed centrepiece of the village's festive decorations did not so much resemble a tree as a festive pot plant, despite a price tag of 125. After being publicly humiliated about the offering - described by many as the 'UK's worst Christmas tree' - councillors moved decisively to replace it.

What a difference: Villagers had dubbed the tree on the left the 'worst in the country'... only for it to be replaced with the tiny tree on the right But their actions appear to have backfired in spectacular fashion when they replaced it today - with an almost identical tree.

Admittedly the new version looks more like a tree and less like a bush, but it is still dwarfed by the 20ft metal frame festooned with lights that surrounds it.

Councillors originally blamed the stunted height of the first tree on a severe gale, which they claimed, left it with a snapped top. Villagers were today mystified by the decision to replace the dwarven tree with one of a similar stature.

One bemused onlooker said:

Is it meant to be a joke? People complained about the old tree because it looked ludicrous. Now we have what is effectively the same tree - it still doesn't fit the poles around it. The council had the opportunity to find a better tree, one which wouldn't be an insult, but that opportunity has been wasted. It doesn't get you in the Christmas spirit.

A spokeswoman for Durham County Council said: 'We hope the tree will be as strong as the community, who we feel sure will cherish it for many Christmases to come.'
