Seeing the list it really is 'favorite' rather than necessarily great works of literature. Some of them (Watership Down for example) I didn't actually like that much and others (The Great Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye) were required reading for courses.

Others like Tess of the DíUrbervilles, Catch 22, and A Prayer for Owen Meaney really were favorites. Some were just childhood reading (The Lord of the Rings, Swallows and Amazons, Chronicles of Narnia)
