US Military to grow jet fuel at $3 a gallon - new breakthrough

The US military announced they’ve got the price of a crude algae oil down to $2 a gallon, and are working on mass-producing jet fuel for a target price of $3 a gallon this year.

They’ve got the motivation: the military is currently using 60 to 75 million barrels of jet fuel a year.

More than that, fuel transport is one of the nightmares of operating in a place like Iraq or Afghanistan. It’s no fun trucking tankers of fuel (which are effectively moving bombs) through a war zone.

When you’re in the field, in places like Afghanistan, all your energy has to be brought in right now.

What we think about is what sort of technology could you have to make yourself tactically independent so that you could generate energy from where you are?

Instead of having this single dependency - fossil fuels, and conserving what we have to slow down the rate at which we consume it, moving more towards the ability to create energy, manage energy, and have a stronger point in its energy security for the future, not only for our military but for our nation as well.

Barbara McQuiston now says they’ve met their base goal and are only “months away” from full-scale production. She expects a refining operation to crank out 50 million gallons next year.

Congress had directed DOD have 50 percent of their fuel needs from biofuel sources by 2016, so this is ahead of schedule. This will also be big news for commercial aviation.

The announcement surprised many industry insiders. But if anyone can pull this off, it’s DARPA – the folks who brought us the Internet and the GPS, among other innovations. Everyone is waiting to see the details, but if this can really be scaled up for commercial use, it’s going to be a major energy breakthrough and a game-changer. The oil Sheiks will be running scared.
