Training snipers for crowd situations - use dummies on segways - updated video

In order to help train snipers in dealing with busy crowds in real world situations, the Australian military has contracted Marathon Robotics to come up with a unique solution - Automated Segways.

Each gyro-stablised people mover gets a dummy mounted on it, and a whole mess of them can be controlled and programmed from one station.

Combine the snipe-bots with a realistically built up area, and you get the ultimate in live-fire exercises.

This new video below looks at the facility and how the robots operate. Note all the holes in the walls and even the car! Its a busy place

Every service strives to establish a challenging marksmanship training program but is constrained by the limitations of currently available technologies. Traditional targetry systems such as rails and pop-ups are fundamentally limited and inflexible in presenting realistic challenging targets. Marathon Robotics has created moving targets -- an innovative solution which eliminates the current constraints and introduces a step change in quality of training.

The Rover system by Marathon applies state-of-the-art robotic technology to live-fire sniper training. This approach simultaneously improves realism and challenge of training while reducing the overall cost of ownership.

The Rover targets are autonomous, which provides a set of unique capabilities:

* Realistic, challenging and unpredictable motion
* Responsive behavior
* Minimum infrastructure

With the Rover system, a single instructor can conduct complex long-duration scenarios with multiple free-ranging targets. No need to use a joystick - just give the command and off they go, following a pre-orchestrated scenario. When a target is shot, it provides instant visual feedback by stopping and dropping its mannequin. It simultaneously sends a message to other targets, who can react by running for cover.

Sniper training also extends to learning how not to be seen, and how to take out people when you do see them.

Very instructive... and useful for the Afghanistan battlefield
